Kakuro online is a free kakuro puzzle game that runs in your web browser, with no sign-up needed. Nothing you enter is uploaded or sent to a server. Kakuro is a number puzzle on a grid of white cells and black clue cells, also called cross sums. You fill each white cell with a digit from 1 to 9 so that every across and down run adds up to its clue, with no digit repeated inside a run.
Choose a grid size from Mini 6x6 to Giant 15x15 and a difficulty of Easy, Medium or Hard, then start a new game. The first game opens as a Small 8x8 Easy puzzle. Every generated puzzle has exactly one solution, so there is always one correct grid to reach.
How to play kakuro online
- Set the Grid size (Mini 6x6 to Giant 15x15) and the Difficulty (Easy, Medium or Hard), then select New game.
- Click or tap a white cell to select it.
- Type a digit from 1 to 9, or use the on-screen pad. To clear a cell, press Backspace, Delete or 0, or use Erase on the pad.
- Move between white cells with the arrow keys.
- Press N to switch notes (pencil marks) on or off. Notes let you write possible digits in a cell. Placing a digit removes it from the notes of other cells in its two runs.
- Read the Combination hint: the digit combinations that still fit the selected cell’s runs.
- Tick Highlight conflicts to mark a digit repeated in a run, and any full run whose digits do not add up to its sum.
- Press Check to mark wrong digits in red. It also tells you how many digits are wrong or how many cells are still empty. Reveal cell and Reveal all show answers. Restart and Reveal all ask you to confirm first.
- When the grid is complete and correct, the page shows “Solved in mm:ss”.
The timer has a Pause/Resume button. It runs only while the page is visible, and pausing hides the board.
Ctrl+Z undoes a move, and Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes it. Copy link gives you a link to the same puzzle, and Print this puzzle prints it on Letter or A4 paper.
Kakuro rules: how do you play kakuro?
You fill every white cell with a digit from 1 to 9 so that each run matches its clue. A run is a line of white cells going across or down. The clue in the black cell before a run is the total of that run’s digits, and no digit may repeat inside a run.
For an across run, the clue sits in the black cell to the left, shown in the upper right of that cell. For a down run, the clue sits above it, shown in the lower left. A grid is finished only when every white cell is filled and every run both adds up to its clue and has no repeats.
Take a 2x2 block of white cells. The across clues are 3 for the top row and 7 for the bottom row. The down clues are 4 for the left column and 6 for the right column. The top row sums to 3 in two cells, so it must be 1 and 2. The left column sums to 4, so it must be 1 and 3. The top-left cell belongs to both runs, so it is 1. That makes the top-right cell 2 and the bottom-left cell 3. The right column needs 6, and 2 + 4 gives that, so the bottom-right cell is 4. The bottom row checks out: 3 + 4 = 7.
How to play kakuro step by step
Most solving comes from a few reliable moves. Work through them in this order, and repeat until the grid is full.
- Fill in sums that have only one possible combination. Examples are 3 and 4 in two cells, 16 and 17 in two cells, 6 and 7 in three cells, 23 and 24 in three cells, and 45 in nine cells. A 45 run must use every digit from 1 to 9.
- In each empty cell, keep only the digits allowed by both its across run and its down run.
- Once a digit is placed in a run, cross it out of every other cell in that run.
- When a run has one empty cell left, that cell is the clue minus the digits already in the run.
If you are stuck, use the Combination hint on the selected cell before you guess.
Frequently asked questions
Is my game saved if I close the page?
Yes. The game is saved automatically in this browser, so closing and reopening the page continues the same puzzle. The save stays in the browser you played in, so use Copy link if you want to reach the same puzzle from another device.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. The game works on phones and tablets using the on-screen pad. On the 12x12 and 15x15 grids, the board scrolls sideways on a narrow phone screen.
Is kakuro the same as cross sums?
Yes. Kakuro is also called cross sums. The rules are the same: fill each white cell with a digit from 1 to 9 so that each run matches its clue, with no repeated digit in a run.
How are the difficulty levels decided?
The site’s logic rater measures them rather than guessing. Easy puzzles can be solved using only sum combinations, removing digits already placed in a run, and the overlap of each cell’s across and down runs. Medium puzzles also need reasoning about a whole run at once. Hard puzzles need at least one step of trial and error.
Does every puzzle have only one solution?
Yes. Every generated puzzle has exactly one solution, checked with a solver that counts solutions.
Can I see how many digits I revealed?
Yes. If you used Reveal cell, the finish message says so, for example “Solved in 05:12 with 2 revealed digits.”
